Cocobolo can be very difficult to plane conventionally, a scraper often being more effective.

The front and back are thicknessed to a nominal figure. The final thickness is dependent upon the specific qualities of the individual piece of wood.

The frets are hammered into place. Over the front care must be taken and the frets may need to be clamped rather than hamered.
